Alumni Spotlight: Matt Gilchrest

A familiar smile with a winning record to match. The TJGT is recognizing Matt Gilchrest of Southlake, TX for the alumni spotlight this week. A former Southlake Carroll Dragon and TJGT Player of the Year, Gilchrest has made waves throughout his junior and collegiate career in true TJGT alumni fashion.

Gilchrest spent his younger years sharpening his game at Timarron Country Club which helped him to develop a combination of precision skills and mental aptitude. During his junior career, he took home five AJGA career wins and several TJGT championships. Gilchrest was such an accomplished junior player that he was not only named TJGT Player of the Year once, but twice.

After a successful junior stint, Gilchrest signed scholarship papers to become an Auburn Tiger. The golf accolades have not stopped rolling in for Gilchrest, even at the Division I collegiate level. As a freshman, he was named to the Freshman ALL-SEC team after winning the 2014 UK Bluegrass Invitational and he was an ALL-SEC second team selection.

In Gilchrest’s sophomore year, he made a leap onto the ALL-SEC first team and became one of only 24 golfers to be named to the Ben Hogan award watch list. A special career highlight in 2015 came when he fired a career low 64 and became the SEC golfer of the week. His low round was the second lowest in Auburn history. To finish out his Sophomore year, he was named an NCAA All-Southeast region selection.

Gilchrest is currently enjoying his junior year and has completed eight tournament rounds for the 2015-2016 competitive season. His best finish was 14th at the Carpet capital Collegiate. Watch for Gilchrest throughout the continuation of Auburn’s season as the competition intensifies.
