Flynn and Patino Claim Trophies at Cypresswood

Cypresswood Golf Club played host to the TJGT Houston branch this past weekend. Competition was held on the Cypress Course, which is home to the Monday PGA Qualifier each year for the Shell Houston Open. The weather on Day one was difficult for the players. The wind kicked up and steady rainfall made for tough, muddy conditions. The course played especially longer in the wet conditions. However, on Day two the sun was out the entire day with mild temperatures and slight breezes.

In the Boys 15-18 Division, Charlie Flynn (2018) of Alexandria, LA won by a single stroke with a 75-73, 148 total. There was a three person playoff for second and third place. Mike Yang (2018) of San Antonio, Tx posted the only even par round of the tournament on day one and he birdied the first playoff hole to win second place. John Keefer (2019), also from San Antonio, bested Dawson Dally (2016) of Katy, Tx on the second playoff hole to claim third place. All three players finished one stroke out of first posting two day totals of 149 each.

In the Boys 11-14 Division, Garrison Hoyt (2020) of Houston won by four strokes with a 75-79 (154). Nodoka Kudo (2019) of Houston claimed second place and shot a 78-80 (158). The third place winner was Carter Hill (2019) of Longview, TX. Hill posted 82-80 for a 162 total.

In the Girls 15-18 Division, Valeria Patino (2017) of Katy, TX took home the championship with an 80-77 (157). In second place, was Amanda Vaughn (2016) of Pearland, TX. Amanda shot 82-82 (164). Rachel Hardy claimed third place with an 80-86 (166).

In the younger girls 11-14 Division, Zoe Slaughter (2020) dominated the field in her hometown win by posting 81-79 (160). Daira Moreno of The Woodlands, Tx (2018) took second place with an 89-93 in the tough conditions. The players displayed their mental strength throughout the weekend and all played well considering the length of the course and terrible conditions. Competitions like the one seen this past weekend can separate champions from the crowd. Several college coaches were in attendance including Dallas Baptist University and Loyola of New Orleans. Coaches often watch tournaments like these in order to see which players can compete in less than perfect conditions.

The next TJGT major championship will be held after Thanksgiving at TPC San Antonio in San Antonio, TX.
