REPORT: Onion Creek Junior Championship

Austin, TX — January 25, 2016 – Seventy-five TJGT players visited Austin, Texas this past weekend with hopes of capturing a TJGT title and AJGA Performance Based Entry Stars (PBE) The players competed on Onion Creek Golf Course, previously the host site of Senior PGA and LPGA events. This Austin region event saw two days of pristine golf weather, especially for late January. Temperatures remained in the mid-50s with clear skies and players were able to attack the pins amidst the prime scoring conditions.

Daniel Montes (2016) of Cedar Park, Texas fired the low round on day one posting a 72 and took the lead in the boys 15-18 division by two strokes. In the girls division, Lauren Cox (2016) from Orange, Texas carded the low round of the day with a 73 to take a narrow one shot lead into the final round over Alexis Szewczyk (2017) from McKinney, Texas who carded a 74.

Dallas Hankamer (2021) of Temple, Texas, J. Holland Humphries (2021) of Austin, Texas and Jacob Sosa (2022) of Buda, Texas all posted 77s to tie for the lead in the Boys 11-14 division after day one.

The final round was a mirror image of the first round with slight winds kicking up during the afternoon. The venue remained in great shape for the young competitors. The winter darkness settled in early as the players finished their final rounds and all playoffs were decided through scorecard playoffs.

Montes (2021) of Cedar Park, TX held on to capture the Boys 15-18 division title with a final round of 76, making his winning two-day total an impressive: 148. He also claimed the four AJGA PBE stars that were offered to the tournament champion. Alex Isakson (2016) of Argyle, Texas carded rounds of 74 and 76 (150) to finish two shots behind Montes in second place. Joseph Kirk (2018) of Monahans, Texas, Cole Fisher (2018) of Southlake, Texas and Logan Diomede (2019) of Argyle, Texas all carded a 154 tournament total in a three way tie for third place. The players finished third, fourth and fifth respectively after a scorecard playoff decided the winners. Each player in second place through fifth place claimed one AJGA PBE star for the event.

In the younger Boys 11-14 division, Hankamer of Temple, TX came out on top with a solid final round of 73, making his tournament total: 150. Mauricio Cavazos (2020) of Monterrey, Mexico came from behind to steal second place and posted a tournament total of 161 (79,72). Sosa of Buda, Tx claimed third place and posted a final round of 78, making his tournament total: 155.

In the Girls 15-18 division, Shawnee Allen (2017) of LaVernia, Texas came from behind in the final round and posted an impressive 72 to tie for first with Cox (2016) of Orange, TX. Both young women carded a 150 tournament total and Allen bested Cox in the scorecard playoff to claim the trophy. Hillary Hernandez of Kyle, Texas claimed third place in a scorecard playoff after tying Szewczyk (2017) of McKinney, TX. Both young women carded a 158 tournament total. Cox, Hernandez and Szewczyk each claimed one AJGA PBE star.

In the younger Girls 11-14 division, Madelyn Jones (2019) of Austin, Texas came out victorious after posting rounds of 84 and 74 for an impressive 158 tournament total. She also earned herself one AJGA PBE sar. Lauren Hinkle (2019) of Austin, Texas claimed second place with rounds of 83 and 78 (151). Yingzhi Zhu (2021) of Austin, Texas rounded out the top three with an 81 and 82 (163) to take home third place.
