Post Report: Oakmont Junior Championship

Corinth, TX — June 22, 2016 – The TJGT staff greeted 52 players on the first day of the 2016 Oakmont Junior Championship. These talented juniors were ready to tee it up and compete on this classic country club venue. The fairways were lush, the greens smooth and a calm breeze drafted in as the competitors began to hit their first tee shots. The juniors were out of school and ready to post some low scores to celebrate the beginning of summer.

Round One

In the Boys 15-18 division, Jacob Kelber (2017) of Southlake, Tx, fired an opening round of 71 (-1 under) to take a one shot lead over Brady Perkins (2018) of Southlake, TX who fired a 72 (even) in in his first round. In the Boys 11-14 division, only six shots separated all four boys competing in this division. Peter Clark (2021) of McKinney, TX created a two shot lead over Jack McClung (2020) of Keller, TX by firing an opening round of 77.

In the Girls 15-18 division, Kathryn Reeves (2017) of Rockwall, TX fired a 73 (+1 over) to create a solid four shot lead over the two other girls heading into the final round. In the Girls 11-14 division, Emma Costa (2021) of Southlake, TX fought hard to post her opening sub-80 round of 79 (+7 over).  

Round Two

The final round of the Oakmont Jr. Championship began promptly at 8 A.M. CT. As the players began their final rounds, numerous low scoring opportunities lay ahead them. In the Boys 15-18 division, Mitchell Vetter of Colleyville, TX played consistently and posted a final round of even par 72. This gave him a three stroke victory over Brady Perkins who fired a final round of 76, to finish with a two day total of 148.

In the Boys 11-14 division, Peter Clark (2021) captured the victory. Clark was the only competitor in this division to post both rounds in the 70s.

In the Girls 15-18 division, Mallery Horn (2017) of Denton, TX ran away with a six shot victory after shooting an impressive final round of 73. Reagan Cantrell (2017) of Plano, TX tied for second place with first round leader Kathryn Reeves. Reeves bested Cantrell on the first playoff hole with a score of five. Emma Costa was crowned champion in the Girls 11-14 division after posting a final round of 82 making her two day total 161.
