Post Report: Cypresswood Junior Championship

Spring, Texas —November 5th & 6th, 2016 – During a weekend filled with mostly beautiful weather, interrupted by one brief, 20-minute monsoon, 45 boys and girls junior golfers teed it up at the pristine Tradition Course at Cypresswood Golf Club north Houston for the annual Texas Junior Golf Tour Cypresswood Jr. Championship.

Day 1 dawned with beautiful weather for the players, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the low-to-mid 80s and a light breeze rustling through the wooded property. Right out of the gate, Louisiana resident Carson Caruso raced to the top of the leaderboard in the Boys 15-18 division, firing a 1-under round of 71. Caruso had a very clean scorecard, tallying 10 straight pars to start his round before an unfortunate bogey on the par-3 11th hole. He bounced back, however, with birdies on two of his last three holes, including a closing 4 on the par-5 18th. Right behind him were two high school juniors, Ransom Jacobson and Charlie Flynn, who both shot even par in round one. Scores were solid across the division, as nine players shot 75 or better on the difficult course, and six were within three shots of the lead heading into the second day.

On the girls side, junior Madison Goldberg of Austin, Texas set the pace for the field, firing a 2-over round of 74 on day 1, including a birdie on her first hole, and four straight pars to finish her round. Andrea Gomez Lloret from nearby The Woodlands, Texas sat just two shots back of Goldberg, and Anika Hovda and Carson Prewitt both broke the 80 barrier with rounds of 77 and 79, respectively.

The round of the day, however, was posted Jean Louis Ducruet Bedoya (2020) of Panama. Ducruet Bedoya fired a 2-under-par 70, highlighted by a run of four straight birdies on holes 3-6, en route to a front nine 32.

The start of day two brought more beautiful weather, with mostly cloudy skies and a nice breeze to keep the temperatures down. The radar looked ominous, however, and around 2:45 PM, the skies opened, dumping driving rain on the golf course for 20 minutes straight. Play was halted for a half hour, but resumed quickly around 3:15 PM as the skies cleared.

The delay caused some tough sledding for players, and overall the golf course played a bit more difficult on day two than it had the previous day. Thirteen-year-old Jacob Sosa of Buda, Texas, playing up with the older boys, carded the round of the day, 71, giving him a two-day total of 147, good enough for second place.

Ransom, who started the day one back of Caruso, grinded it out through the weather delay to card an even-par round. Despite going four over in three holes early in his back nine, Ransom came back after the weather delay and birdied his final two holes for a two-shot victory over Sosa. Flynn, playing with Ransom, finished with 76, for a two-day total of 148, good enough for a victory in a scorecard playoff over Spring, Texas, resident Sean Callaway.

In the girl’s division, Hovda shot the round of the day, a 1-over-par 73, to bounce back from a first-day 77 and take the title by three shots. The senior’s final round was highlighted by three birdies, and she played her final six holes in even par, after the weather delay. Goldberg finished solo second place, and Gomez Lloret took third.
