Cypress, Texas — November 19 & 20, 2016 – The TJGT Cypress Lakes Fall Classic began like a ‘Winter’ Classic as the first cold front of the year for Houston, TX rolled in. The wind caused havoc on the course as many of the holes are lined with water on both sides of the fairway. The “three-club” cold wind from the north made the course extremely difficult, however the players did a great job of staying a mentally and physically strong. The wind and fast greens left few scores in the 70s on the first day. Many of the players came from regions far from Houston such as Mexico, Louisiana, Lubbock, Temple, Dallas, Corpus Christi, and Austin. Coach Drew Belt from Ole Miss visited to watch two of his current signees and a couple of other recruits play.
In the Boys 15-18 Division, a high school freshman out of Richmond, TX named Stephen Campbell shot an even par round of 72 on the second day to come out of the non-leader foursome and win by a single shot over Hunter Bott (Class of 2019) from Montgomery, TX who shot great wind condition rounds of 79-76. Winning third place was out of state Dezmenn Reich (2018) who drove in from Lake Charles, LA. In the younger Boys 11-14 Division, Temple native Dallas Hankamer (2021) shot a great 76-77 to also win by a single shot. Hankmaker is an up and coming player destined to be like his two older TJGT past champion brothers. Andrew Spaulding (2022) from Spring, TX put up a good fight but finished one stroke back at 154. Finishing in third place was J. Holland Humphries from Austin, TX with a 157, he too posted in the 70’s both days.
In the Girls 15-18 Division, Maria Jose Martinez (2018) came all the way from Alvardo, Mexico to claim the title. She started the second day two strokes out of the lead, but then shot the only tournament score under par, a 69. Martinez blistered the back nine with a 5 under par 31 to top off her three stroke win. Julia Johnson (2017) from St. Gabriel, LA had a great tournament after shooting 74-74 for the runner-up trophy, but could not overcome Martinez’s back nine 31. Johnson is committed to Ole Miss to play collegiate golf. Charlotte Davis (2017) from Corpus Christi, TX also had a great tournament as she finished in third place with a 77-79. In the Girls 11-14 Division, Freshman Elina Sinz (2020) from Katy Tompkins H.S. in Katy, TX shot both rounds in the 70’s with a 156 total to win by six strokes. She too has a bright future and is under the radar of a lot of college coaches. Two Houston girls won second and third place. Jaqueline Nguyen (2021) shot 83-79 for second, and Ashley Yen (2022) shot 89-79 for third place.
