Post Report: Tournament of Champions at TPC San Antonio

August 4, 2016 – San Antonio, Texas – The J.W. Marriott and TPC  San Antonio welcomed the TJGT for the annual end of the summer Tournament of Champions. The venue for this event is the largest draw for junior golfers and their families across the county. The J.W. Marriott San Antonio resort, also the largest Marriott property in the world, is home to the TPC San Antonio’s PGA tour courses and world class amenities, including: four high class restaurants and bars, an upgraded water park complete with lazy river and a full service spa and gym, etc. 106 junior golfers teed it up on Monday in hopes of conquering the Oaks course – a well established venue for the PGA Tour’s Valero Texas Open.

Day One

Cole Enlow (Frisco, TX) and Holden Wisener (Dallas, TX) posted exceptional first rounds of 74 to take the early lead in the 54 hole event. Each player carded one birdie and numerous pars to hold their round together that ultimately prevailed after the first day. On the girls side, Libby Winans (Richardson, TX), who is no stranger to the trophy ceremony (she posted a top 3 finish last year in this event) lead the girls division with a first round score of 75. She used two birdies on the back nine to post a one under par 35 for the inward nine holes.

Day Two

There were calmer winds on the second day but the course still played up to its PGA resume. Low Rounds of the day were posted by Madelyn Jones (Austin, TX), Clayton King (Uvalde, TX) and Grayson Litowitz (Austin, TX) who each signed for a 73. King clinched four birdies to post his round and take the overnight lead heading in the last round. Libby Winans stayed strong with a round of 77 to hold onto her lead over night and move into the final round with a three shot lead.

Day Three

The final round had similar conditions as day two, calm winds and sunny skies. The low round of the day went to Kevin Graves (Plano, TX) who shot the only under-par round of the week with a 70, placed him into a tie for second. Clayton King (Uvalde, TX) closed out a great tournament with a 72 to best Graves and Santiago Garcia (Brownsville, TX) by six strokes and claim first place. For 2nd place, Santiago beat Graves on the first hole sudden death playoff hole with a birdie. Holden Wisener (Dallas, TX) finished solo in 4th place with a three day total of 228, and a three way tie for fifth was won by Gerardo Daniel (San Antonio, TX) on the first playoff hole with a birdie. Libby Winans (Richardson, TX) closed the tournament out with a 77 to finish with a three day total of 229 and beat Bentley Cotton (Austin, TX) by one stroke. Madelyn Jones (Austin, TX) finished third, one stroke back of Bentley.
