[MAY 29-31, 2021 | SAN ANTONIO, TX] Despite the ominous clouds, multiple weather delays and wet, tough conditions, it was a record-setting week at the 2021 Texas Masters as tournament totals and single-record records were shattered with a barrage of birdies and eagles.
In the Boys Division, San Antonio’s Jackson Hymer jumped out to a torrid start in Round 1, firing a 9-under-par 62 at Brackenridge Park GC, a tournament record for single-round performance. Hymer made 11 birdies in his first round, including a stretch of five birdies in seven holes on the back 9. He “cooled off” in Rounds 2 and 3, firing a 67 in Round 2 and a 68 in Round 3, capping the tournament off with a long bomb for birdie on the 18th during Round 3.
He finished at 16-under-par for the tournament, the lowest total in tournament (and TJGT) history. Finishing four shots back at 12-under and in solo second was Round Rock’s Davis Grindle, and Pflugerville’s Eston Duff finished a shot back of Grindle for solo third at 11-under par. In any other year, both Grindle and Duff’s 54-hole scores would have been good enough for victory.
In the Girls Division, Austin’s Sydney Givens tied the girls tournament record with a 3-day total of 7-under-par, shooting 68-70-68=206 for an impressive 6-shot victory. Similar to Hymer, Givens ending the tournament in style, holing a 25-footer for birdie on the last hole to stretch her lead to six. She made 12 birdies throughout the week against only 5 bogeys
Finishing 6 shots back and tied for second place were Austin’s Farrah O’Keefe and New Braunfels’ Julie Garcia.
